How do you measure the thickness of leather?

In the Canada and the USA, leather thickness is commonly expressed in ounces. This leather measurement specifies thickness rather than weight in the conventional sense. If you are purchasing from Canada or the USA, it is essential to understand ounce measurements because it is necessary to have the appropriate thickness of leather for a specific job.
Each ounce of leather is how thick?

0.4mm, or 1/64 of an inch, is equal to one ounce of leather. 1.6mm or 1/16 of an inch is therefore equal to 4 ounces, and so on.
